Similarities and Difference between Religion and Science - Essay in 500 Words -
➦ In medieval Europe Christianity was at the height of its power. All criticism and free thinking were mercilessly crushed. Men of science like Bruno, Copernicus and Galileo were tortured or killed at the stake under the Inquisition. With the passage of time science conquered all oppositions.

Today science has come to stay. Religious education has ceased to be what it was. does all this mean that religion is threatened with extinction? Will the world of the future have no religion whatsoever? One hesitates to give a categorical answer.

➦ Religion is a changing and growing phenomenon. Religion can be narrow-minded or liberal-minded. Orthodoxy, dogmatism, fanaticism, formalism ritualism are those parts or aspects of religion which are bound to die.

Then what is left of religion? The devotional attitude, the spiritual or mystical experience, a sense of the divine in the world and in life are still left. The poet Wordsworth speaks of the essence of the universe in these arresting words :

.... Something far more deeply interfused
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,
And the round ocean and the living air,
And the blue sky, and in the mind of man.

➦ Oppenheimer and his band of co-workers in atomic research are reported to be daily readers of the Bhagawad Gita. Schopenhauer, the German philosopher, said that the Upanishads had been the solace of his life and they would be the solace of his death.

Goethe was a man of science also and a poet who gave powerful expression to the essential spirituality of the material world.

Swami Vivekananda, Swami Ram Tirth, Aurobindo Ghosh, Rabindranath Tagore and Anand Coomarswami in the twentieth century gave to the world the highest and the most illumined exposition of the spiritual truths of Hinduism.

Their appeal to the best minds of Europe and America was very far-reaching. Religion and science do not conflict with each other. They rather supplement each other. Says Tennyson,

Let Knowledge grow from more to more,
But more of reverence in us dwell;
The mind and should according well,
May make one music as before.

And again,

Our little systems have their day;
They have their day and cease to be:
They are but broken lights of thee
And thou, O Lord art more than they.

And again,

There lives more faith in honest doubt,
Believe me, than in half the creeds.

➦ As science progresses and spreads, creedal religion will be more and more pushed to the back lines. Today, as Pandit Nehru said, "The world needs less religion but more spirituality". Scientific education should be supplemented with education and training in the humanities.

People's interests in and their desire for the gifts of science should be supplemented with an interest in poetry, music, painting and the other fine arts.

The fine arts save us from grossness and vulgarity. As Shelley says, "Poetry preserves from decay the visitations of divinity within us".

It is the same Shelley that wrote in his early youth the pamphlet entitled The Necessity of Atheism, for which he was expelled from Oxford.

➦ Religion should not be allowed to result in river political groups. It should not be allowed to become a dividing force. As the poet Ghalib says, "When religious denominations or religious groups will die, they will all merge into the true religion -0 the religion of humanity". Communal, creedal, separatist religion is in danger in an age of science; but true spirituality is not.
