➽ Are we a united or a disunited people ? We are divided int separate language groups, caste and creed groups with different food habits, different forms and fashions of dress and different attachments and loyalties.

We are divided into Bengalees, Assamese, Oriyas, Biharis, Punjabis, Rajasthanis, Guaratis, maharashtrians, Dravidians and so on.

But with all these divisions and distinctions we have had the longest common history and have lived together in peace and brotherhood for thousands of years.

The unity of more than seventy five crore Indians cannot be denied or dismissed as a myth. Ours is a unity rich in promise and possibilities.

➽ Professor Radha Kumud Mukherjee in his book The fundamental Unity of India, points out how from ancient times throughout success ding ages the makers of the Indian civilization forged unity out of diversity.

Our sacred books, our epics, our schools or systems of philosophy  are the same for all Indians.

Our music and our dances, our laws, even our fairy tales and folk tales, our myths and legends, our places of pilgrimage, our festivals, our classical literature are common to all Indians.

In the face of these facts, which speak for themselves, can we question India's unity ? Can we dismiss India as merely a geographical expression ?

➽ India has been the motherland of mankind from time immemorial. It is also the homeland of all religions.

It is also the cradle of all systems of philosophy, theistic and atheistic. It is a country where the mind is free.

Dravidians and Aryans, Huns, and Scythians, Greeks, Abrabians, Persians and several other races made India their home and became merged with one another. Social fusion has been the distinctive feature of Indian history.

➽ Our foreign rulers followed the policy of divide and rule. They encouraged division and conflict.

They made troubles for us. Our own faults and weaknesses also have been there to blame.

The forces of disunity and senseless conflict let loose during foreign rule have not ceased to do mischief even after freedom.

We have to reawaken in every Indian a sense of unity and a sense of the values of national integration.

Every Indian should see to it that communal riots, stabbings and murders do not occur.

We should oppose in an organised manner all parties and organisations, sanghas or senas which disrupt the unity of India.

Simply because of difference of language or region or religion we cannot treat a fellow Indian as a foreigner or an enemy.

➽ The minorities should be made to feel as safe and secure, as hopeful and proud of India as the majority.

Journalists, speakers and leaders who excite sectional passions or hurt the feelings of any community, should be firmly death with.

Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, gave his life for communal unity. In school and college textbooks the importance of national unity and national integration should be emphasized.

➽ The message of India has been that the whole world is one family. Inclusiveness, and not exclusiveness, has been India's teaching throughout her long and chequered history.

Not this or that but this and that has been India's guiding force since Indian civilization began Unity amidst diversity has been the teaching of the most enlightened minds of India.
