Brief Essay on Space Flight

➽ Space flight is one of the wonders of modern science and technology Emerson said that the poet was landlord, sea-lord, air-lord. The flight of imagination made the poet master of land, sea and air. But a poet's dream of yesterday becomes today an actual achievement and a reality for all men. Even those who invented, improved and perfected the aeroplane could hardly have dream of the possibility of flight into outer space.

➽ Russia and America were, till recently, the only two countries which had accomplished space flight. The atmosphere which surrounds our planet, the earth, ceases after a certain distance, beyond which the space ship enters the atmosphere-less and airless outer space. Outer Space is a vacuum in which it is not possible to breathe. So tubes of oxygen have to be kept ready to enable the crew of the spaceship to breathe. This crew has to be equipped with special dress and other special equipment and devices. Very special training is needed for piloting a space ship. From several million miles above the earth radio signals and messages to the earth have to be sent through instruments which are marvels of science and technology. No less wonderful are the devices for descent to the earth from gravitation-less outer space.

➽ From the explorations of Columbus and others who discovered the North and South poles and the heroic feats of those who conquered Everest to the flight in outer space was indeed a far cry. But man has done it. Man has already planted his flag on the moon. Soon there will be space stations supplying special fuels for higher and still higher space flights. The lure of the unknown will in the not distant future enable man to explore the heavens. Tennyson, more than a hundred years ago, had spoken of the fairy tales.
Of science and the wonders that would be.

➽ Tennyson's dream has come true. Space flight may solve many problems. But we fear it will also create many problems. It may reveal hitherto undiscovered laws of seasons and climates and the unknown facts and features of the stellar world; it will considerably widen the horizons of human knowledge. But it may make war far more deadly and destructive. The freedom and the life of national may be threatened from space stations.

➽ Scientific progress unless accompanied with moral progress may prove a danger and a curse to mankind. We have reached the moon and may go beyond the moon. But have we learnt to walk the earth properly ? Are we like Wordsworth's skylark ? Are we
True to the kindred points of heaven and home ?
